Help! My son is in Germany and his debit chip card doesn’t work!

Here is a very important fact you will want to bear in mind if you or a family member are travelling outside of the United States – even if it’s “just” to Canada or Europe: Due to international financial fraud, U.S. banks (including Canton Co-operative) have turned off debit chip cards for transactions outside the United States.

Which means that outside of the 50 states, your debit chip card will not work unless you have contacted us and asked us to activate your card for international use.

Basically, if you’re headed out on a trip where you’re going to need your passport and you want to be able to use your debit chip card while you’re away, you will need to come see us or call 781-828-8811 x5 before you go. Then you’ll be all set.

If you get to your destination and realize you forgot to let us know, you can still call during Bank business hours and we will turn your debit chip card on for use in the countries where you’re travelling.

But considering time differences and your need for access to your money when you’re outside the 50 states, making the arrangements before you go could possibly make your life a lot easier.

(An idea: Put a Post-It on your passport to remind yourself or add “Call bank to turn on debit card” to your packing list.)

The number again here at Canton Co-operative is 781-828-8811 x5. If you have questions about the debit chip card international security program and you’d like to talk to someone here about it, ask for Barbara Fotheringham or Jill Corwin or come see us.

Canton Co-operative – a bank customers like, a bank you can trust – since 1891.
Canton Co-operative Bank is located at 671 Washington Street, Canton, MA 02021.
The main phone number is 781-828-8811. NMLS #721437
