A young woman and her mother came into Canton Co-operative to open a Connections Checking account. As part of the account-opening, we asked what brought them in.
The daughter currently had a checking account at a large regional bank near her college. And that bank was charging her ATM fees, overdraft fees, all kinds of fees. Recently she’d made a mistake recording her balance. A bunch of her transactions bounced and they hit her with multiple $38 insufficient funds fees.
Her mother suggested she should go to her bank and talk to them to see if they would cut her a break “this one time.”
Apparently the people at that bank were particularly unfriendly and inflexible. They told her they didn’t refund fees … ever! They also suggested it wasn’t their job to provide her with an education on how to use a checking account.
Wow! At Canton Co-operative, we developed our Connections Checking free checking account for young people ages 15-24 specifically so kids could learn how to manage a checking account.
We know people new to checking accounts mess things up occasionally. And while we can’t make exceptions every time or over and over, we try to give our young customers the benefit of the doubt. Along with helpful hints and good advice for doing better next time.
Because – at Canton Co-operative – we do think it’s our job to help people learn how to use a checking account. We’re different that way.
There are no ATM fees on Connections Checking, and we refund the ATM fees other banks charge. There are no overdraft privileges on Connections Checking – that helps protect young people who are new to using checking accounts from racking up a lot of overdraft fees. It’s easy to set low balance alerts and money can be transferred in any time.
