Canton Co-operative Bank: Why we are the way we are

At Canton Co-operative, we were very lucky in our founders. Men and women who were devoted to the town of Canton and to the idea that people need a safe place to save and a fair place to borrow.

Basically they believed it was vitally important for a hometown like Canton to have a hometown bank. That was in 1891.

We have also been very fortunate in our management over 127 years. Men and women who shared our founders’ belief and remained true to the words of our first President, Ephraim Thorndike, when he promised that Canton Co-operative would help local people obtain “homes, happiness and independence.” That has always been our goal and it always will be.

In a letter to customers, current President & CEO (and Canton native) Nick Maffeo wrote, “We love helping customers solve problems and we really love helping them avoid problems.”

When it’s something that matters, customers (and plenty of local people who aren’t customers yet) know they can come in and ask a question or get a second opinion on a financial decision they’re considering.

It is our pleasure to answer people’s questions and help them succeed with money.
To us, that’s what community banking is all about.

After a recent mortgage closing, a borrower sent a hand-written card to AVP/Director of Residential Lending Anabela (Bela) Vasconcelos. “We felt like you actually cared about us,” he wrote.

If you’re going to be buying a home, refinancing, tapping into your equity or opening a new checking account for yourself or a young adult in your family, come see us. Because we really do care.
